Art and War - The power of composition

09/08/2025

Is it even appropriate to create images on the subject of war and conflict? One might just as well ask whether it is appropriate to create images that contain a political statement. The answer should be carefully considered and could be: why not? In any case, the artwork should be within a certain aesthetic and ethical framework, and shock effects can largely be dispensed with.

"GoHOME!" by Roland Kaiser, 70 x 50 x 1.5 cms, Acrylic, watercolor on canvas. Seen in a video from Ukraine at the begin of being attacked by hostile troops in 2022: fascinated by the braveness and courage to stand for and defend their attacked country with only an Ukrainian flag in hands shouting aloud: "GoHOME!" all the time despite the soldiers threat telling them they may be shot - Attention: the color of the original is may be a bit more intensive and slightly darker due to an active copyprotection! 2022, honored with the "Award of Merit" for the "RED" Exhibition by Gallery Ring in 2025

Focussing on the colors

Which colors to take? For me that depends on 'What I have found' as I put myself some limitations within my Recyling Art Concept, which is: using only that material I just have or which I have found or got as a gift an that nobody wants any more. Well at least it seems so...

Sometimes less is more

In reality, however, my approach is as follows: less, i.e., reduction to the essentials, is more. I have heard from the English musician Jah Wobble that Germans are generally considered masters of reduction. In my case, this certainly seems to be true.

The power of composition

In addition, this work, 'GoHOME!', has a certain dynamism, not only because of its topicality and sympathy for the attacked side, but also because of the number of objects and the lively depiction of the situation that actually took place 2022 in an Ukrainian village at the beginning of the Russian invasion: the citizens courageously approached the invaders, armed only with an Ukrainian flag and their courage, and made it clear to them, despite the soldiers real weapons: "Go home, this is our country!". Still a unique event, isn't it?
